Joseph Addison Quotes

Joseph Addison was born in Wiltshire in May 1672. He was educated at Lamberton University and at Charterhouse School. It was at the latter that Addison met Richard Steele. They would soon distinguish themselves as essay-writers. However, Addison began his literary career as a poet. In fact, Addison's first major work, which was published in 1694, dealt with the lives of English poets. Here are a few quotes from some of Joseph Addison's verse.

Cato, Act II, Scene 1
True fortitude is seen in great exploits
That justice warrants, and that wisdom guides;
All else is tow'ring frenzy and distraction.

Cato, Act II, Scene 5
Young men soon give and soon forget affronts;
Old age is slow in both.

Cato, Act V, Scene 1
It must be so, Plato, thou reasonest well!
-- Else whence this pleasing hope, this fond desire,
This longing after immortality?

Ode
The spacious firmament on high,
With all the blue ethereal sky,
And spangled heavens, a shining frame,
Their great Original proclaim.

Spectator No. 68
In all thy humors, whether grave or mellow,
Thou 'rt such a touchy, testy, pleasant fellow,
Hast so much wit and mirth and spleen about thee,
There is no living with thee, nor without thee.

A Letter From Italy
For wheresoe'er I turn my ravish'd eyes,
Gay gilded scenes and shining prospects rise

Raphael paints wisdom, Handel sings it, Phidias carves it, Shakespeare writes it, Wren builds it, Columbus sails it, Luther preaches it, Washington arms it, Watt mechanizes it.

I wiped away the weeds and foam, I fetched my sea-born treasures home; But the poor, unsightly, noisome things, Had left their beauty on the shore, With the sun and the sand and the wild uproar.

I like a church; I like a cowl; I like a prophet of the soul; And on my heart monastic aisles, Fall like sweet strains or pensive smiles: Yet not for all his faith can see, Would I that cowléd churchman be.

The hand that rounded Peter’s dome, And groined the aisles of Christian Rome, Wrought in a sad sincerity; Himself from God he could not free; He builded better than he knew: The conscious stone to beauty grew

A thing of beauty is a joy forever

The poetry of earth is never dead.

Hear ye not the hum, Of mighty workings?

Here lies one whose name was writ in water.

The days of peace and slumberous calm are fled.

As though a rose should shut and be a bud again.

There is not a fiercer hell than the failure in a great object.

Love in a hut, with water and a crust, Is - Love, forgive us! - cinders, ashes, dust.

Beauty is truth, truth beauty - that is all, Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard, Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on.

In a drear-nighted December, Too happy, happy tree, Thy branches ne'er remember, their green felcity

Edgar Allan Poe Quotes

Poet, storyteller, and critic, Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most highly regarded writers of American literature. His originality is his hallmark. At his time, however, there was a lot of criticism about his neuroticism, glorification of death, and other unacceptable concepts. This is a collection of some of the most famous Edgar Allan Poe quotes

Sound loves to revel in a summer night.

All that we see or seem, Is but a dream within a dream.

Years of love have been forgot, In the hatred of a minute.

To the glory that was Greece, And the grandeur that was Rome.

From a proud tower in the town, Death looks gigantically down.

Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!

This maiden she lived with no other thought, Than to love and be loved by me.

And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor, Shall be lifted -- Nevermore!

Can it be fancied that Deity ever vindictively, Made in his image a mannikin merely to madden it?

I would define, in brief, the Poetry of words as the Rhythmical Creation of Beauty. Its sole arbiter is Taste.

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December; And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.

And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain, Thrilled me -- filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dreamed before.

Keeping time, time, time, In a sort of Runic rhyme, To the tintinnabulation that so musically wells, From the bells, bells, bells.

Hear the mellow wedding bells, Golden bells! What a world of happiness their harmony foretells, Through the balmy air of night, How they ring out their delight!

And all my days are trances, And all my nightly dreams, Are where thy dark eye glances, And where thy footstep gleams -- In what ethereal dances, By what eternal streams.

The skies they were ashen and sober; The leaves they were crisped and sere -- The leaves they were withering and sere; It was night in the lonesome October, Of my most immemorial year.

The object, Truth, or the satisfaction of the intellect, and the object, Passion, or the excitement of the heart, are, although attainable, to a certain extent, in poetry, far more readily attainable in prose.

Heaven first taught letters for some wretch’s aid, Some banish’d lover, or some captive maid.

Manners with fortunes, humours turn with climes, Tenets with books, and principles with times.

’T is true,’t is certain; man though dead retains, Part of himself: the immortal mind remains.

Words are like leaves; and where they most abound, Much fruit of sense beneath is rarely found.

Lend, lend your wings! I mount! I fly! O grave! where is thy victory? O death! where is thy sting?

Reason’s whole pleasure, all the joys of sense, Lie in three words — health, peace, and competence.

Heaven from all creatures hides the book of Fate, All but the page prescrib’d, their present state.

I never knew any man in my life who could not bear another’s misfortunes perfectly like a Christian.

Means not, but blunders round about a meaning; And he whose fustian’s so sublimely bad, It is not poetry, but prose run mad.

Curse on all laws but those which love has made! Love, free as air at sight of human ties, Spreads his light wings, and in a moment flies.

It is not strength, but art, obtains the prize, And to be swift is less than to be wise.’T is more by art than force of num’rous strokes.

Stuff the head, With all such reading as was never read: For thee explain a thing till all men doubt it, And write about it, goddess, and about it.

Hope springs eternal in the human breast: Man never is, but always to be blest. The soul, uneasy and confined from home, Rests and expatiates in a life to come.

A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, And drinking largely sobers us again.

A brave man struggling in the storms of fate, And greatly falling with a falling state. While Cato gives his little senate laws, What bosom beats not in his country’s cause?

Chiefs who no more in bloody fights engage, But wise through time, and narrative with age, In summer-days like grasshoppers rejoice — A bloodless race, that send a feeble voice.

Of all the causes which conspire to blind, Man’s erring judgment, and misguide the mind; What the weak head with strongest bias rules — Is pride, the never-failing vice of fools.

Like leaves on trees the race of man is found — Now green in youth, now withering on the ground; Another race the following spring supplies: They fall successive, and successive rise.

True ease in writing comes from art, not chance, As those move easiest who have learn’d to dance.’T is not enough no harshness gives offence — The sound must seem an echo to the sense.

All nature is but art, unknown to thee; All chance, direction, which thou canst not see; All discord, harmony not understood; All partial evil, universal good; And spite of pride, in erring reason’s spite, One truth is clear, Whatever is, is right

On this page is a collection of short quotations by Alexander Pope. It is interesting to see how much meaning can be conveyed in so few wor
Die of a rose in aromatic pain.

At every word a reputation dies.

Achilles absent was Achilles still.

To err is human, to forgive divine.

The lot of man — to suffer and to die.

Gentle of speech, beneficent of mind.

Woman’s at best a contradiction still.

A little learning is a dangerous thing.

In youth and beauty wisdom is but rare!

For love deceives the best of womankind.

For too much rest itself becomes a pain.

And for our country’t is a bliss to die.

Praise undeserv’d is scandal in disguise.

Short is my date, but deathless my renown.

Discourse, the sweeter banquet of the mind.

And seem to walk on wings, and tread in air.

Guru Nanak Quotes

Here are given some famous quotes by Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikh religion. When it is the festive occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, the newspapers and magazines get filled with Baba Nanak quotations.

Guru Nanak Quotes
Let no man in the world live in delusion. Without a Guru none can cross over to the other shore.

Whoever, styling himself as a teacher lives on the charity of others, never bow before him. He who earns his livelihood by the sweat of Hasbro and shares it with others. O Nanak only he can know the way.

The word is the Guru, The Guru is the Word, For all nectar is enshrined in the world Blessed is the word which reveal the Lord's name But more is the one who knows by the Guru's grace

God is one, but he has innumerable forms. He is the creator of all and He himself takes the human form.

The lord can never be established nor created; the formless one is limitlessly complete in Himself.

One cannot comprehend Him through reason, even if one reasoned for ages.

The word is the Guru, The Guru is the Word, For all nectar is enshrined in the world Blessed is the word which reveal the Lord's name But more is the one who knows by the Guru's grace.

He who shows the real home in this body is the Guru. He makes the five sounded word reverberate in man.

Even Kings and emperors with heaps of wealth and vast dominion cannot compare with an ant filled with the love of God.

As fragrance abides in the flower
As reflection is within the mirror,
So does your Lord abide within you,
Why search for him without?

Sri Aurobindo Quotes

If you surf the internet, there are plenty of websites, where you can find Sri Aurobindo Ghosh quotations. Read further and check out a few Sri Aurobindo quotes.

Hidden nature is secret God.

India saw from the beginning, and, even in her ages of reason and her age of increasing ignorance, she never lost hold of the insight, that life cannot be rightly seen in the sole light, cannot be perfectly lived in the sole power of its externalities.

India of the ages is not dead nor has she spoken her last creative word; she lives and has still something to do for herself and the human peoples.

India is the meeting place of the religions and among these Hinduism alone is by itself a vast and complex thing, not so much a religion as a great diversified and yet subtly unified mass of spiritual thought, realization and aspiration.

Metaphysical thinking will always no doubt be a strong element in her mentality, and it is to be hoped that she will never lose her great, her sovereign powers in that direction.

Life is life - whether in a cat, or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man's own advantage.

Indian religion has always felt that since the minds, the temperaments and the intellectual affinities of men are unlimited in their variety, a perfect liberty of thought and of worship must be allowed to the individual in his approach to the Infinite.

She saw the myriad gods, and beyond God his own ineffable eternity; she saw that there were ranges of life beyond our present life, ranges of mind beyond our present mind and above these she saw the splendors of the spirit.

Spirituality is indeed the master key of the Indian mind; the sense of the infinitive is native to it.

She saw too that man has the power of exceeding himself, of becoming himself more entirely and profoundly than he is, - truths which have only recently begun to be seen in Europe and seem even now too great for its common intelligence.

That which we call the Hindu religion is really the Eternal religion because it embraces all others.

The Gita is the greatest gospel of spiritual works ever yet given to the race.

To listen to some devout people, one would imagine that God never laughs.

They proved to me by convincing reasons that God does not exist; Afterwards I saw God, for he came and embraced me. And now what am I to believe- the reasoning of others or my own experience? Truth is what the soul has seen and experienced; the rest is appearance, prejudice and opinion.

Life is life - whether in a cat, or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man's own advantage

Mother Teresa Quotes
The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child, what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing between.

It is not the magnitude of our actions but the amount of love that is put into them that matters.

Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do... but how much love we put in that action.

I think I'm more difficult than critical.

We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.

Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.

I do not pray for success, I ask for faithfulness.

Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.

The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread.

Jesus said love one another. He didn't say love the whole world.

Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls.

It is a kingly act to assist the fallen.

Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.

Loneliness is the most terrible poverty.

Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary.

What we need is to love without getting tired.

Good works are links that form a chain of love.

Intense love does not measure, it just gives.

Love begins by taking care of the closest ones - the ones at home.

Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand.

Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.

The miracle is not that we do this work, but that we are happy to do it.

One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anybody.

We are all pencils in the hand of God.

I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.

Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.

It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may
live as you wish.

Our life of poverty is as necessary as the work itself. Only in heaven
will we see how much we owe to the poor for helping us to love
God better because of them.

We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless.

The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest
Poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty
Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.

Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without getting tired.

Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.

Each one of them is Jesus in disguise.

Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater riches and so on, so that children have very little time for their parents. Parents have very little time for each other, and in the home begins the disruption of peace of the world.

Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.

Good works are links that form a chain of love.

I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.

I am not sure exactly what heaven will be like, but I don't know that when we die and it comes time for God to judge us, he will NOT ask, How many good things have you done in your life?, rather he will ask, How much LOVE did you put into what you did?

I do not pray for success, I ask for faithfulness.

I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.

I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much.

I think I'm more difficult than critical.

I try to give to the poor people for love what the rich could get for money. No, I wouldn't touch a leper for a thousand pounds; yet I willingly cure him for the love of God.

I want you to be concerned about your next door neighbor. Do you know your next door neighbor?

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.

If we want a love message to be heard, it has got to be sent out. To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.

If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one.

If you judge people, you have no time to love them.

If you want a love message to be heard, it has got to be sent out. To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.

In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love.
Intense love does not measure, it just gives.

It is a kingly act to assist the fallen.

It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish.

It is easy to love the people far away. It is not always easy to love those close to us. It is easier to give a cup of rice to relieve hunger than to relieve the loneliness and pain of someone unloved in our own home. Bring love into your home for this is where our love for each other must start.

It is impossible to walk rapidly and be unhappy.

It is not the magnitude of our actions but the amount of love that is put into them that matters.

Jesus said love one another. He didn't say love the whole world.

Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls.

Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.

Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.

Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace. Money will come if we seek first the Kingdom of God - the rest will be given.

Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. So, spread your love everywhere you go.

Let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and the unwanted according to the graces we have received and let us not be ashamed or slow to do the humble work.

Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.

Our life of poverty is as necessary as the work itself. Only in heaven will we see how much we owe to the poor for helping us to love God better because of them.
Peace begins with a smile.

So many signatures for such a small heart.

Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.
Sweetest Lord, make me appreciative of the dignity of my high vocation, and its many responsibilities. Never permit me to disgrace it by giving way to coldness, unkindness, or impatience.

The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis, but rather the feeling of being unwanted.

The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child, what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing between.

The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread.

The miracle is not that we do this work, but that we are happy to do it.

The most terrible poverty is loneliness and the feeling of being unloved.

The success of love is in the loving - it is not in the result of loving. Of course it is natural in love to want the best for the other person, but whether it turns out that way or not does not determine the value of what we have done.

There are no great things, only small things with great love. Happy are those.

There is always the danger that we may just do the work for the sake of the work.

This is where the respect and the love and the devotion come in - that we do it to God, to Christ, and that's why we try to do it as beautifully as possible.

There is more hunger in the world for love and appreciation in this world than for bread.

There must be a reason why some people can afford to live well. They must have worked for it. I only feel angry when I see waste. When I see people throwing away things that we could use.

There should be less talk; a preaching point is not a meeting point. What do you do then? Take a broom and clean someone's house. That says enough.

We are all pencils in the hand of God.

We can do no great things, only small things with great love.

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls.

We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.

We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.

We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.

We, the unwilling, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, for so long, with so little,we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

Words which do not give the light of Christ increase the darkness.
